Internal Coil Cleaning for Chilled Water and Glycol System

External or Air Side coil cleaning is widely recognized to be beneficial for system performance and efficiency.

However, every heat exchanger has two sides: Fin&Tube coils, shell-and-tube, or Plate&Frame. Seldom do we consider the internal state of these systems. They are never seen, and it is presumed that whatever water treatment strategy is being used is doing its job. The fact is that after years of use and no thought to ongoing maintenance, this side of the heat exchanger may have decades of biological and mineral buildup. If you mix Glycol in the system, you most likely have even more buildup within the system.

Biomik has pioneered and patented a new non-destructive, Clean-in-Place (CIP) process to restore both flow and thermal transfer in these nook-and-cranny structures. Our process is also highly effective at removing both large and small particulate matter from these structures.

Let me take you on a video tour of the inside of a chilled water coil:

Your chilled water and glycol coils are one of the most critical yet overlooked components in HVAC systems. While air-side cleaning is common, the internal side — where fluid flows, minerals build up, and biofilm silently accumulates — rarely gets the attention it deserves. Over time, this hidden fouling can dramatically reduce heat transfer, impede fluid flow, and increase energy costs.

At Biömik®, we go beyond surface cleaning with a patented Internal Coil Restoration process that restores performance closer to original design — without dismantling equipment.

The Hidden Problem Inside Coils

Even coils that look clean on the outside can be heavily fouled internally. Typical issues include:

  • Biological Growth & Biofilm – Sticky, resilient, and nearly invisible without inspection

  • Mineral Scale & Sediment – Deposits that scale tube walls and restrict flow

  • Corrosion Byproducts – Rust and grit that impair thermal performance

These factors reduce chilled water/glycol circulation and thermal transfer over time, forcing your chillers and pumps to work harder — increasing energy usage and operating costs.

How Our Patented Process Works

Biömik’s Internal Coil Cleaning is engineered for depth and precision:

Non-destructive Clean-In-Place (CIP) — No coil removal required
✔ Advanced cleaning fluids paired with controlled circulation
✔ Designed to reach every internal tube and passage
✔ Removes microscopic biofilms and embedded mineral deposits
✔ Completes in a single service session in most facilities

This approach goes far beyond conventional flushing or surface washing — it attacks the root causes of internal fouling.

Before vs. After:
Real Performance Transformation

Before Biömik Restoration

  • Coil internal flow is restricted by heavy biofilm & mineral scale

  • Heat transfer efficiency reduced by up to 35%

  • Elevated chilled water pump energy usage

  • Chiller running longer cycles

  • Higher T-stat setbacks to try to maintain comfort

After Biömik® Internal Coil Cleaning

  • Restricted passages cleared — fluid flows freely

  • Heat transfer efficiency restored 20–30%+

  • Quieter, smoother pump operation

  • Lower energy consumption on chilled water loop

  • Improved setpoint stability, reduced runtime

  • Operational savings visible on utility bills

Note: Actual results vary by system age and fouling severity, but measurable gains are typical — and often immediate.
