Improve Your IAQ

For every human cell in you, there are 10 bacteria on you and in you.

If you added up all the genetic material (DNA) from both your human cells and your bacterial cells, 99% would be bacterial and just 1% would be human. So, depending on which metric you use, you are either 10% or 1% human.

We interact and coexist with microscopic environments (Microbiomes) 24 hours a day. Many of us are now familiar with the research on human gut health. From this research, probiotics have emerged as supplements that help balance the flora of our gut microbiome. Our buildings operate very much like our bodies, and they also have very distinct microbiomes of their own. Dr. Jessica Greene has a great TED Talk about how the microbiomes in our buildings are closely associated with the Air Handling Unit (AHU) that serves that specific area.

AHUs and the coils inside them are almost perfect Bio-Reactors, meaning they provide optimal conditions for growing very robust and diverse microbiomes. Biofilms are the communities that house, protect, and nurture the bacteria that reside inside your AHU. Biofilms contain a wide variety of bacteria, molds, yeasts, viruses, and protozoa. Biofilms receive new bacteria from both indoor and outdoor air, which is mixed within the AHU. There is absolutely no control over the incoming microbes or the growth that occurs once inside. Sometimes, these biofilms can become hazardous to the building's occupants.

Biomik has integrated a very special blend of probiotics into our three US patents. These products have enabled us to clean and remove very entrenched, stubborn biofilms from coils and other nooks and crannies where they reside. They also have the added benefit of being on par with a food-grade additive, pH-neutral, and VOC-free.

Ways Biömik Helps Improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

  • Reduce harmful biofilms hidden in HVAC equipment — Biömik’s patented processes target the biological growth that thrives inside coils and air handling units, where conventional cleaning often can’t reach.

  • Lower airborne bacteria, mold, and allergens by removing the biofilm reservoirs that continuously seed the air with contaminants during HVAC cycling.

  • Decrease odors and microbial odors originating from HVAC coils and internal components.

  • Support healthier ventilation systems — clean, unobstructed coils and internal passages help maintain better airflow and ventilation balance throughout occupied spaces.

  • Enhance overall system filtration performance by reducing the particulate and biological material load carried through ductwork and filters.

  • Promote occupant well-being and comfort by minimizing sources of airborne irritants and contaminants.

  • Improve HVAC energy efficiency and reliability. Healthier systems circulate cleaner air more efficiently, reducing opportunities for pollutant buildup that can degrade IAQ over time.

General Best Practices for Better IAQ

  • Maintain HVAC filters properly: Replace or upgrade filters on schedule to trap more dust, pollen, and particles.

  • Manage humidity: Keep indoor relative humidity in a balanced range to discourage mold and microbial growth.

  • Ventilate effectively: Adequate intake of fresh air and exhaust help reduce indoor contaminants.

  • Complement with air purification: Supplemental HEPA or advanced air cleaners can further reduce particulate and allergen levels.
